The most common type of breast implant is a saline breast implant. Saline is salt water, and it occurs naturally in the body. Although it is very rare for a breast implant to break, if one does it is not harmful because saline is non-toxic to the human body.
Silicone breast implants are also available – but are currently still used in very specific situations. Many women, though, are candidates for silicone augmentations. Essentially, there are no medical concerns regarding silicone breast implants and, should you be a candidate, we recommend without a doubt using the silicone breast implants. The only way to know whether you are a candidate or not is to come in for a free complimentary consultation.
- Saline breast implants are available in several shapes and textures. The type of saline implant used is determined during your consultation. Your weight, height, body frame, and personal desires are all factors in determining what size and shape of breast implant will be used in your procedure.
- Adjustable saline implants are rarely used. They are implants that can be increased or decreased in size after they have been inserted into your body.
- During adjustable breast implant surgery, a small injection port is left open along with a filling tube. Using a syringe, our surgeons can alter the size. This is not something that can happen again and again – rather, it happens once after the surgery, then the port is sealed and the tube removed. The advantage of an adjustable breast implant is that the size of your breasts can be fine-tuned to fit the shape of your body.
Only highly-trained surgeons, like Dr. Haupt, can determine if adjustable breast implants are appropriate for you after personally examining you.
