Buccal Fat Pad Removal

Buccal fat pad removal surgery is used to correct excessively puffy cheeks. This is sometimes referred to as “chipmunk cheeks.” The most common cause is genetics.

The goal of the procedure is to remove the excessive fatty tissue, and create a sleeker, thinner face. However, precautions must be taken before undergoing this procedure. As people age, their face naturally thins. If too much material is removed in a surgical procedure, patients will see their face becoming unnaturally gaunt and sunken as they age. This is why – before any procedure is started – your doctor must work with you to determine exactly how much fatty tissue should be removed. Because genetics is a key factor, often times the appearance of older members of your immediate and extended family will be taken into consideration.

The procedure itself involves an incision that is made inside your mouth. Fatty tissue is liquefied and removed. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and is relatively painless.

The end result is smoother, less puffy cheeks.
