What are Varicose Veins?

You know what they look like, but you might not know exactly what they are. Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood back to your heart (as opposed to arteries, which carry blood away from it). Since the veins in your legs are below your heart they are constantly pushing your blood upward, working against gravity. To help them do this, they have valves which prevent the blood from flowing backwards.

When these valves become weak or fail, the blood runs backwards and pools in your veins, causing them to balloon and resulting in varicose veins. At first, this is merely unsightly and embarrassing, causing you to hide your legs. Over time, the problems can become more serious and can include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Rashes
  • Sores and skin ulcers
  • Legs that tire easily
  • Life threatening blood clots

We tend to think of varicose veins as a mere visible sign of aging, but in reality they can occur early in life and they can create dangerous health problems.

Benefits of Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose vein removal has many benefits, from boosting self esteem, to pain relief and even preventing and relieving serious health problems. It is easy to underestimate the seriousness of varicose veins, assuming that they are only a matter of vanity, but anyone who has lived with them for long knows better.

Varicose vein treatment can do more than improve your enjoyment of life; it can literally save your life. It is one of the few “cosmetic” procedures which may be covered by your health insurance because of its direct correlation to severe health problems.

Types of Varicose Vein Treatments

Varicose vein treatments can range from non-invasive to surgical removal of unhealthy veins. Utah Cosmetic Laser & Aesthetics is a 3-D Cosmetic Practice and Dr. Haupt can perform full surgical procedures when needed to address your needs. Varicose vein treatment options include:
