“When I reviewed respected surgeons work on the new Ulthera, I was excited. So I had Ulthera perform the procedure on myself and I've been pleasantly surprised with the skin tightening results I achieved. We purchased Ulthera to make available a quick and easy face tightener to people in Utah. So many patients tell me they want even modest results with no down time or invasive surgery. This is the best option I have seen so far as it tightens at two levels. The skin and the deeper fascia/muscle layer that is tightened during a facelift.”

What is Ulthera?

Ulthera is the first FDA approved non-invasive skin tightening treatment that reaches the deep tissues of the face. In clinical evaluation at Northwestern University, subjects exhibited clinically significant, aesthetically pleasing lift of the brow line after just one treatment.

  • Helps reduce the droopiness or tired look
  • No down time
  • FDA approved
  • No scars
  • Recently seen on "The Doctors" TV show
  • First and only non-invasive deep tissue tightener
  • You'll be out in the public the same day

First came fillers in the Eighties, then lasers, then Botox-all still useful in their own way. And there's always been surgery. Now there's Ultherapy, a face and neck treatment that creates a brand new category in aesthetics-non-invasive tissue lifting.

For the first time ever, Ultherapy enables practitioners to direct sound waves not only into the skin but deep under the skin to the same tissue addressed in surgery. This gently heats the tissue to lift and tighten loose skin without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. Besides the visible effects of lifting and tightening, there is also an invisible result from Ultherapy with the creation of new collagen, which helps the skin maintain its youthfulness.

Ultherapy lifts, tightens, and tones loose skin to counteract the effects of time and gravity. One of the first effects of gravity is that the brows descend, and the eyes start to appear smaller. Ultherapy will lift the brow, which in turn reduces the excess skin on the lids, opens up the eyes and gives a more refreshed appearance. When the skin on the cheeks and neck begins to shift downward, the result is a change in the contour of the lower face. Ultherapy can lift and tighten the sagging skin on the cheeks and neck to give a younger, slimmer look.

The beauty of Ultherapy is that it is a 60 to 90 minute procedure that uses the body's own subtle healing response to gently, gradually-and reliably-restore memory to the skin and its underlying tissue. Ultherapy requires no special recuperation or preparation and typically only takes one treatment to get a meaningful response. Patients enjoy some initial effect immediately following the procedure, but the ultimate lifting will take place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is rejuvenated and supplemented with new, stronger collagen.

There isn't a replacement for the dramatic effects of surgery, but Ultherapy offers a 'no downtime' approach to improving lax skin in a meaningful way.

Ulthera® Receives First-Ever FDA Clearance for Non-invasive Lift of Skin on the Neck and Under the Chin

Non-surgical Ultherapy® ultrasound procedure now used to tighten turkey necks and smooth out double-chins

Ulthera, Inc. – a global, high-growth medical device company pioneering aesthetic and medical applications using its therapeutic ultrasound platform technology announced today (Oct. 10, 2012) that its ultrasound platform device, the Ulthera System, has received FDA clearance to non-invasively lift lax tissue on the neck and the submentum (under the chin).

This is the second lift indication that the System has received; the first cosmetic lift indication was granted in 2009, when the Ulthera System was cleared as a facial treatment with a specific indication for non-invasive eyebrow lift. To date, the Ulthera System remains the only energy-based device with an indication for lift.

The Ulthera System – which combines time-honored ultrasound imaging with focused ultrasound therapy – is used in Ultherapy, a face and neck treatment with well over 100,000 patient procedures performed worldwide.

“This latest validation of the Ulthera System and Ultherapy procedure is testament to the results our clinicians report globally,” said Matthew Likens, president and CEO of Ulthera. “We know from our customers and their patients that sagging skin under the chin and on the neck is a significant issue. Patient demand for a non-invasive lift on the face and neck with just one treatment and no downtime is well established.”

“As an FDA-cleared facial treatment for more than three years, many clinicians have noted results outside the indicated brow area,” said principal investigator Jeffrey Kenkel, M.D., Professor and Vice-Chairman of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “The ability to specifically claim lifting in another area, however, required solid quantitative data that would support noticeable and measurable results in these areas.”

“This clearance for the neck and under the chin is just one in a series of many new clinical indications we are pursuing in the years ahead,” Likens continued. “Utilizing our tried-and-true ultrasound technology, our customers can expect to see continued investment by Ulthera to expand our platform technology’s treatment capabilities.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Ultherapy procedure work?

As with other ultrasound procedures, a smooth applicator placed upon your skin projects an image onto a screen that allows your practitioner to plan where the energy will be sent. This same applicator is then used to deliver low levels of focused heat at just the right depth below the skin to achieve a positive effect, all the while leaving the surface of your skin undisturbed. Your skin's response to the energy is to stimulate the growth of new collagen. A gradual tightening and firming occurs, resulting in a natural lift of the skin over time.

How is this procedure different than non-surgical skin tightening procedures?

Ultherapy is the only nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that can specifically target and strengthen the deep foundational layer of tissue that doctors address in surgery. The ability to treat not just the skin but its underlying support, from the inside out, helps to ensure both safe and satisfying results, with no downtime.

What does it feel like?

There may be some discomfort while the energy is being delivered, but it is temporary and a signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, and practitioners will discuss options for making the experience as pleasant as possible. Patients leave comfortable and happy given the benefits to come.

What can I expect afterwards?

You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take. Your skin may appear a bit flushed immediately after the treatment, but any redness should disappear within an hour. Occasionally patients may experience slight swelling or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature.

Is Ultherapy safe?

Ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for over 50 years and clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of this latest application. As with any medical procedure, there are general safety considerations, which your physician will review with you.

What kind of results can I expect?

With just one treatment, the regenerative process is initiated, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment.

Visible effects include a lifting and toning of loose skin. In the FDA clinical trial for instance, nine out of ten patients had a noticeable, significant lift of the brow line. This resulted in reduced skin laxity on the eyelid and a more open, youthful look to the eyes overall. Patients reported firmer, better-fitting skin in other areas of the face and neck as well. There is also an invisible result from the procedure with the creation of new collagen, which can help to slow down the rate of skin aging.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?

A good candidate for Ultherapy is someone with skin that has "relaxed" to the point of looking, and often feeling, less firm. A lowered brow line or sagging skin on the eyelids, for instance, is often the first sign of "maturing" skin.

While it is not a replacement for surgery, Ultherapy has proven to be an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery.
